I started building skin kayaks in 2003 after several years of studying skinboats in museum collections. I taught myself using books, photos and illustrations. I test each boat myself in a variety of conditions before handing over to the owners. Because of this, each boat built is better than the last.
When my wife and I started our sleddog kennel in 2006, I decided to take what I knew about building traditional skin kayaks and apply that to dogsled design and building. I have been lucky enough to get to know some of the best sled builders in North America and have had the opportunity to meet with and tour the shops of Tim White (QCR and Matrax) Odin Jorgenson (Sawtooth Mountain Sleds), Dave Klumb (Laughing Husky) and Ed Salter (traditional finishing sled builder for early iditarod champions). Now after a few years of trial and error, I have come up with some nice designs that perform well in alaskan conditions.
